HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Nearly 100,000 people throughout Alabama suffer from Alzheimer's disease. Hundreds of people joined together in Huntsville to help find a cure.

The annual Walk to End Alzheimer's took place Saturday morning at the Botanical Gardens.

Money raised goes to help provide services for Alzheimer's patients and their caregivers. Proceeds also help fund research and awareness initiatives.

Organizers said the event gets bigger with each passing year. "We've had more people pre-register today than we have ever had in the history of any of our walks," said Courtney White.

"We had more than 1,000 going in; had so many more people registering today. I can't wait to get back, crunch the numbers, see what's happening," White said.

Alzheimer's disease is the nation's sixth-leading cause of death, and affects more than 5 million people in the US.
