HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

New numbers show the gap between the rich and poor is continuing to grow. The rich are getting richer, the poor poorer. Thankfully there are organizations out there that help fill in the gap.

Holy Spirit Catholic Church has dozens of volunteers who help the poor through the St. Vincent de Paul Society. A society, inspired by one man.

"St. Vincent de Paul was a Frenchman and he started helping the poor in the early 1600's and for about 30 or 40 years. He wasn't a priest or anything, he was just a person interested in helping the poor. I would liken Vincent de Paul to Mother Teresa," said volunteer John Zierdt.

Today hundreds of thousands of volunteers reach out to those desperate for help.

"Somebody is having trouble paying their electric bill, and they're about to have their electricity cut off, will go meet them and find out what the problem is and we'll go to the utility and pay their bill for them," said Zierdt.

He also said the society is unique in the fact that they meet people in their homes, where they're comfortable.

"They're not just bureaucrats sitting in an office where you go visit them, these people go out and pray with the people, they sit down and try to help them."

The Huntsville St. Vincent de Paul Society has two events where you can help raise money. The Hope Luncheon is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Friday Sept. 27th at the Von Braun Center and on the 28th there's a 5k Friends of the Poor Walk beginning at Our Lady, Queen of the Universe Catholic Church at 8 a.m.
