Huntsville city leaders approve millions in fiscal budget

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Members of the Huntsville City Council voted unanimously Thursday night to approve the $241 million budget for the city.

Mayor Tommy Battle said that the money comes from things like sales taxes, business licenses and other fees. Battle said he wanted a balanced budget for the city that is also fair.

Some of the money will go towards things like increased health care, employee benefits, retirement funds, new buildings, greenways and more. "Things that will last longer than 10 years," Battle said, adding that the new budget is about $5 million more than last year.

"We are spending a little more than last year, but not much more than we had last year so if we have $5 million more in revenue coming in we are going to have $5 million more in expenditures so that balances it up," he said.

The new budget goes into effect Oct. 1st.
