Crowd turns out for annual NW Alabama Job Fair

A large crowd of job seekers was greeted by about 20 employers Thursday at the third annual Northwest Alabama Job Fair. It was at Regency Square Mall in Florence.

The timing of the fair coincided with Wednesday's announcement that the International Paper plant in Courtland was closing, costing the jobs of about 1,100 employees.

The lineup of employers included Buffalo Rock, Regions Bank, the Florence Police Department and the University of North Alabama.

Organizers said they aimed to bring a variety of employers.

"The main thing is there are jobs available, there are jobs here that may not be exactly what they've done in the past but if their open minded and willing to explore different avenues, I think the job market does have jobs," said Tammy McDaniel of the Community Action Agency of Northwest Alabama, one of the fair's sponsors. "Obviously, every vendor is not represented here in the Shoals community that would have a job but the variety that's here is everything from the food industry right on up."

The Shoals Chamber of Commerce and Verizon Wireless were also sponsors of the fair.
