"It really does have long term effects on kids," said child advocate Karen Hangartner.
Hangartner said finding ways to keep sexting from occurring at all is a parent's challenge.
"Parents need to be looking at their kids phones," said Hangartner. "That is the bottom line. They need to be able to know and screen as much as possible to protect their kids."
But with continuous changes to technology, Hangartner said it's difficult for parents to keep up. She said honest conversation with your child, and yourself, can keep your kids protected.
"Parents need to parent," said Hangartner. "And parents need to be informed parents. And never think it can never happen to your child."
If you have any information, you're asked to call Huntsville Area Crime Stoppers at 256-53-CRIME.
