Shannon Johnson sentenced to life in prison

Posted: Updated:

The Lauderdale County District Attorney described a man found guilty of escape "lawless." Shannon Johnson was given the maximum sentence Thursday afternoon for escaping the Lauderdale County Work Release Center under the state's habitual offender laws.

After more than an hour's worth of testimony and discussion, a Lauderdale County judge sentenced Johnson to life in prison.

During sentencing, Prosecutor Chris Connolly said Johnson is a threat to the community, citing his criminal history, previous encounters inside the courthouse, and Johnson's four prior felony convictions.

"I think it's an appropriate sentence. We are pleased with the judge's decision," said Connolly.

Johnson's attorney said they plan to appeal the case.
