COURTLAND, AL (WAFF) -

The state's Commerce secretary will meet Friday with International Paper officials in Courtland.

Gov. Robert Bentley asked Secretary of Commerce Greg Canfield to step in after the company announced Wednesday it was closing the plant.

According to the governor's office, Canfield will meet with plant officials to discuss and explore possible options to prevent the loss of jobs.

The plant, which employs 1,100 people, will shut down by the end of next March.

Bentley said he also directed the Department of Economic and Community Affairs to promote rapid response services for the affected workers.
