HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

An attendance expert from John Hopkins University met with Huntsville area educators to provide insight and tips to help students succeed.

Doctor Robert Balfanz has worked with Lee High School in Huntsville for several years. He's helping with a state program called "Every Child a Graduate."

Dr. Balfanz discussed tools and other teaching methods to help keep kids focused. He said attendance can play a big role in child's future.

"You could think it is a little, missing two day a month, no big deal," said Dr. Balfanz. "But, two days a month is 20 days in year and that is a whole month of schooling. Essentially if you miss a whole month of schooling, you are going to struggle academically and have much lower odds they will actually graduate."

Dr. Balfanz said parents play a huge role in a child's attendance and dropout rates. Checking your child's grades and attendance record regularly is the first step.
