Strong 'surprised' at vote but said county is ready to move forward

Posted: Updated:
HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

After Madison County voters soundly rejected the proposal to combine the tax collector and tax assessor offices into a county revenue commissioner position, Commission Chairman Dale Strong said it's time to move forward.

Strong was an advocate of the merger, saying it would increase efficiency and save money.

However, others said the move would mean a loss of checks and balances and would not save money.

"I was surprised," he said of the vote. "I honestly thought the consolidation effort would be the route to go.

"Now we know where we are going and Madison County will be fine going this direction."

Tuesday's special election cost $300,000 and a little more than10,000 voters cast their ballots; there are more than 233,000 registered voters in Madison County.
