FLORENCE -- University of North Alabama sophomore running back Lamonte Thompson of Florence has been named Gulf South Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in UNA's 42-7 season-opening win over Miles College Thursday night at Braly Stadium.
Thompson, a second-team All-GSC selection as a freshman in 2012, earned his first GSC Player of the Week award after rushing for a career-high 189 yards on just 14 carries against the Bears. He averaged 12.5 yards per carry and scored on runs of 38 and 69 yards. He also caught one pass for 20 yards to finish with 209 all-purpose yards.
Thompson's 69-yard touchdown run also earned him recognition on ESPN as the play was ranked No. 5 on the Plays of the Day for Sept. 5.
It was Thompson's third career 100-yard rushing game. He also rushed for over yards against Miles in his first collegiate game in 2012, then added a 100-yard performance against eventual 2012 national champion Valdosta State.
