An inmate at a Georgia prison is being charged with impersonating police officers from the City of Prattville in an effort to get residents to send money to him.

The inmate, identified as Jesse Barrett Mainor, 22, is originally from Prattville, but is serving time in Georgia for armed robbery and aggravated assault.

An investigation was opened in July after at least nine Prattville residents started getting phone calls from Mainor, who was identifying himself as a Prattville Police Officer. The suspect would then tell the citizen that they had a warrant out for their arrest for charges ranging from traffic violations to missed jury duty orders.

Authorities say Mainor, would tell the citizen that they needed to get a Green Dot Moneypak and call him back with the card number to clear the warrant. THe suspect even used names of actual Prattville police officers during the calls.

The Prattville Police Department put two investigators on the case and they tracked down the suspect to the Georgia facility.

"These types cases are very difficult to solve and very few Departments have the resources to Investigate these cases to the extent this one was," Police Chief Mark Thompson's office said in a statement. "From the Investigation other cases will be made in different location in Alabama as well as other States."

Mainor has prior charges in Prattville for burglaries in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd degrees as well as outstanding charges in Florida.

Mainor now faces charges of impersonating a peace officer and 8 other charges will be referred to a Grand Jury.
