AG drops theft charge against father of school shooter

MADISON, AL (WAFF) -

The Alabama Attorney General dropped theft charges filed against Dr. Iqbal Memon, the father of the Discovery Middle School shooter.

Memon was accused of stealing more than $7,000 from the Alabama Medicaid Agency. Memon is a pediatrician in Athens.

The motion to dismiss, filed Monday morning, states "Due to an inadvertent mathematical error, there is a fatal variance between the value of the property alleged in the indictment." The motion adds, the State's evidence does not meet the threshold for a Theft of Property First Degree charge.

A Montgomery County Judge signed the motion to dismiss, officially dropping the charge.

Memon still faces an unrelated charge in Madison County. Investigators say he helped his wife, Safia, try to get their son, Hammad, out of the country before Hammad Memon's murder trial.

Safia Memon pleaded guilty to attempted hindering prosecution. Hammad Memon pleaded guilty to the 2010 murder of Todd Brown at Discovery Middle School.

Iqbal Memon's hindering prosecution trial is set for October 28.
