HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A Huntsville civil rights activist and his son will commemorate the desegregation of Alabama schools this week.

Monday morning, Dr. Sonnie Hereford III and his son, Sonnie Hereford IV, will re-create the walk to school they made 50 years ago, when the elder Hereford, then just six years old, became the first black student to attend an all-white school.

They will re-trace their steps to the site of the old Fifth Avenue Elementary School, which is now where the Huntsville Hospital Spine and Neuro Center now stands, at the intersection of Gallatin and Governors.
