HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The North Alabama Spay and Neuter Clinic marked the milestone of its 5,000th surgery Sunday with an open house. Such clinics have been in the spotlight many times this year, as some groups want them to close their doors. Making matters worse, a bill aimed to help keep them open failed to pass.

The clinic in Huntsville is still going strong, thanks to support from the community. Reaching the milestone of 5,000 surgeries is remarkable, given that the clinic has only been open for a year and a half.

Clinic officials said the real cause for celebration is the number of lives saved. They believe fixing animals is the key to reducing euthanasia. They said it is making a big difference in this community, where feral cats and dogs that have big litters are a problem, not to mention the thousands of animals the pound is forced to put down each year.

"It makes it safer for the community too, because when your animal is fixed, they are better behaved and will have a rabies shot," explained Beverly Dezenberg. "Chances are you are not going to have animals roaming around, posing dangers to society."

The clinic provides services at more affordable prices to make it possible for lower-income families to get their pets fixed.
