GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A plane made an emergency landing in Lake Guntersville Sunday evening.

The pilot of the small Piper aircraft, Tom Bonds, said he had been on a sightseeing trip originating in Gadsden. Around the Scottsboro area, the plane's engines failed.

Bonds said he began an emergency descent towards the Guntersville airport, but had to make a water landing about 100 yards shy of land. Bonds said this was his first close call after years of flying.

"Your training takes over," said Bonds. "Once we understood we were going into the water, you just try to make it as soft as possible." He said he will try to salvage the plane once it is pulled out of the water.

Matthew Wade, the Chief Deputy with the Calhoun County Sheriff's Department, was the other person on board the plane. No injuries were reported.
