CULLMAN, AL (WAFF) -

Cullman High School was eager to hit the field Friday night, one week following a fight between two coaches that grabbed national attention. Cullman assistant coach Matt Hopper and Walker head coach John Holladay threw punches at each other after last week's game. They had to be separated by other coaches and players.

The Alabama High School Athletic Association reviewed video footage of the incident and investigated this week. They levied a $1,500 fine against both teams. In addition, Cullman is on nonrestrictive probation, meaning they can play tonight and every other game of the season. They can also have the opportunity to go to the playoffs.

Walker High is on restricted probation: even if they were to win every game, they will not be allowed to attend playoffs. Walker issued an apology, saying they are saddened about the situation.

Cullman also issued a statement saying they cooperated with the investigation and that a Cullman coach has never been thrown out of a game. Both schools said they will use this as a learning experience for future players.

Residents said the situation still put Cullman in a bad light. "Football is supposed to be about sportsmanship, and a fight like that takes away from the spirit of game," said resident Cameron Arnold.

When reached for further comment, the Cullman superintendent said she would rather let the press release speak for itself.
