State program could boost local road improvements

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A half dozen local roads could see improvements in the next couple years thanks to a state department of transportation program.

The Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program (ATRIP) will provide money, with local matching funds, to improve the highways in Huntsville, Madison and Madison County.

"The three local governments have agreed to stretch this $50 million into basically $75 million by stepping up from a 20 percent match to a 33 percent match," said state DOT Director John Cooper. "It will be two-thirds ATRIP money and one-third local money."

The Huntsville road projects include adding lanes to a portion of Zierdt Road and a portion of Winchester Road; Madison's work will be adding lanes along U.S. 72 and a corridor created between Kellner and Zierdt roads. In the county, portions of Winchester and Jeff Roads will be widened.

ALDOT officials expect the projects to get underway within the next two to three years
