GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. That's what the city council of Guntersville is doing when it comes to last month's failed attempt to pass a measure that would create an arts and entertainment district. The district would span from the alleyways behind Gunter and Blount Avenues from the River Bridge to Worth Street.

An attempt to pass the measure in August failed by a single vote. A group of citizens attended the meeting this week urging the council to pass it.

One resident said much of Guntersville's growth is based on tourism and quality of life. "We've got wonderful shops downtown," said Matt Arnold. "To keep those shops open at night, later in the evening, to bring more people in, that's what this notion is really about."

"Some call it the creative class, and that's what people are looking for," Arnold continued. "You need to give those types of folks every avenue they have to exercise that. An arts and entertainment district falls in line with that."

The council is expected to vote on the district once again when they meet on Sept. 23.
