A service station north of Florence caught on fire shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday.

Smoke could be seen for miles from Buck's Market on Cloverdale Road. Five volunteer departments from surrounding communities and Florence Fire Department responded to the scene to assist putting out the flames.

It took about an hour to knock down the flames. Emergency responders reopened the roads to traffic shortly after 5 p.m. while fire crews put out hotspots.

Station owner Bob Parks said that the building was gutted, but that he hoped insurance would help him rebuild. "No one was hurt, but we took a financial loss," he said. "We will suffer through it."

Four firefighters were treated at the scene for heat-related illnesses. A cause has not yet been determined.
