NASHVILLE, TN (WAFF) - The first lawsuit in connection with a fatal Lincoln County, Tennessee wreck involving a stolen police car has been filed.
The woman accused of stealing that police car and causing the crash is in a Nashville jail. Misty Shelton faces several charges including vehicular homicide.
Investigators say she stole a Fayetteville police cruiser over the weekend, then slammed it into an SUV on Highway 231-431. Henry Holt, a passenger in the SUV, died. Five people, including Shelton, were injured.
Shelton was charged in connection with the wreck on Wednesday after she was released from the hospital. Investigators said while in the process of being arrested for shoplifting, Shelton stole a police officer's cruiser.
After hitting the SUV, the cruiser then crashed into a pump at a nearby gas station.
Holt's family is suing the city of Fayetteville, the Fayetteville Police Department, the police officer involved in the incident, and Misty Shelton for $7.4 million.
At a news conference in Nashville Thursday, Holt's family said this wouldn't have happened if protocol had been followed.
