BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The day has finally arrived: ALDOT says that weather permitting, they will re-open I-20 westbound tonight.

The lanes of I-20 between I-459 and I-59 (exits 130 to 136) have been closed for about two months for resurfacing work.

ALDOT says the roughly 74,000 vehicles that traveled that stretch of highway each day simply wore out the asphalt.

The closures have caused headaches for drivers since April of this year, when the eastbound lanes were shut down for repaving and other road improvements. Westbound lanes were closed in June. The road construction companies had until Thanksgiving to finish the project but the companies earned $30,000 a day for each day they finish early.

Over at the Golden Rule BBQ the work has taken a toll on their customers who did not want to take a detour to get back to work at lunch hour. Co-owner Sammy Derzis said he and other businesses near the interstate are welcoming the re-opening.

"Everybody is going to be real happy here now because everything is is like it ought to be. It's been messed up here a little bit but now it's going to be alright. We are going to do fine," Derzis said.

Additional work in the area will be announced soon and the entire repaving project is expected to be completed this winter.
