Folks in southeastern Madison County have a new place to go if severe weather strikes. Wednesday morning, two community storm shelters were installed behind the New Hope Fire Department building. Mayor Butch Taylor said each of the two can comfortably hold 100 people, but more can squeeze in if need be.

"We didn't have anything in this town," Taylor said. "Most everybody went to the basement of the old Methodist church or our old city hall. There's not a lot of places to go. One of the goals I had as Mayor was to try to get a safe, secure place for our citizens."

Taylor said even though the shelter is in New Hope city limits, no one will be turned away from the shelter in times of emergency.

The shelters were a joint venture with the city and county commission. They also received some financial help from the state, and no taxpayer funds were used.

Taylor hopes to have the shelter open by the middle of the month.
