MedFlight staff adapt with 1 less chopper

The emergency helicopter based out of Danville is no longer in business.

Crews with Huntsville's 'Med Flight 2' were told about the closing Tuesday afternoon. Until the chopper is somewhere it will be put to use, it's resting at the MedFlight 1 location in Meridianville.

"Unfortunately we didn't receive enough calls to maintain the service in that community," said David Bowman, the regional business manager for Air Methods. They are the parent company of MedFlight.

Bowman said it costs millions to keep the chopper in its old spot in Danville, but with no calls coming in, twelve to fifteen nurses, medics, pilots and mechanics had to be let go.

"We had very highly skilled crews: pilots, mechanics, everyone who was employed at the base was outstanding," he said. "They were the best of the best in their fields."

He said the loss of service will impact travel and response time but quality and patient care will stay the same.

"MedFlight 1 will be able to respond in about 10 minutes to the northern part of Morgan County and 15-20 minutes to the south western part of Morgan County," he said.  "Obviously that's a little bit further mileage, but it won't cost anything more as far as direct operating costs for this space or the customers that we serve."

Until the chopper finds a permanent place to rest, Bowman said he doesn't want the people who live in Danville or the surrounding areas to be worried if they have an emergency.

"MedFlight 1 is still here," he said. "We are still in business and we are as ready as ever to serve them anytime we have the opportunity to serve them when they are in their time of need."

Bowman said MedFlight is working hard to find jobs for those 12-15 employees who were let go.
