Madison woman jailed for murder; 7-month-old child drowns

MADISON, AL (WAFF) -

A Madison woman is behind bars on a murder charge after her seven-month-old child drowned in the bathtub over the weekend.

Police said Desiree Childers, 27, was arrested Tuesday; she is being held in the Madison County Metro Jail.

According to police, the emergency 911 line was called Saturday after the child was found unresponsive in the bathtub.

A man claiming to be the owner of the home on Oak Brook Circle said the woman, the child and the child's father have been renting the house for about eight or nine months. He said he believes the drowning was an accidents and Childers did not have any intentions of killing her child.

Police said the death is under investigation and they haven't ruled out additional charges or more arrests.
