HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange recognized Challenger Middle School for its safety plan Tuesday.

Strange presented Challenger Middle School with the 2013 Safe School Initiative Award of Excellence at an assembly Tuesday afternoon. School officials said they're honored to accept the award.

School principal Dianne Hasty said, "We had to submit a lot of information about what we do in the event of an emergency. We had to submit some of the things that we use, some of the tools that we use, and so we turned all of that in and as a result we're very honored to be selected."

"Challenger was one of the schools across the state that submitted a plan, we thought it was fantastic," said Strange. "It had great aspects to it, and we're going to take some of those aspects and apply it to other schools around the state."

Strange said this program will help identify the best practices schools are using to keep their students safe.
