Mother Nature brings several trees down on Guntersville homes

Posted: Updated:

Labor Day morning's storms caused damage all across the Tennessee Valley. Trees and wind took out power lines from Guntersville to Huntsville.

Margaret Gurley's nerves rattled as hard as her house as a storm packing high winds and heavy rain knocked on the door of her Guntersville home.

"All the ceiling and everything was coming down," said Gurley. "Rain was coming down. Then this tree. We heard the tree coming through the windows."

Down the road, more neighbors woke from the sounds of destruction.

"I heard the glass breaking when (the tree) hit," said neighbor Ruby Jowood.

Jowood felt trapped when a tree in her yard fell victim to Mother Nature.

"I was afraid to get up because of the glass," said Jowood. "I was afraid I would cut my feet. So I just laid in bed until it got better."

Her house wasn't damaged, but her car was crushed by the weight of an oak.

Power lines in the area were near crushed as well. Crews worked all day to restore power to neighborhoods hardest hit.

The majority of people in Guntersville had their power restored by Monday night. As of 4 p.m. only about 150 people were still in the dark.
