Report: Alabama motorists driving farther; US motorists cut back

Posted: Updated:

Alabama seems to have a habit of bucking national trends and, when it comes to hitting the road, Alabamians are driving more – while the rest of the nation is cutting back.

According to the group U.S. – PIRG, the federation of state public interest research groups, Americans have cut back their driving for the eighth year in a row, traveling about 9,400 miles a year per capita. Its research shows mileage per capita has been falling since 2004.

Meanwhile, according to the report – based on 2011 data, the average Alabamian drives more than 13,000 miles per year. Other states which showed increases are Louisiana, Nevada and North Dakota.
