FAYETTEVILLE, TN (WAFF) - The woman accused of stealing a police car before crashing it and causing a fatal wreck remains hospitalized, according to a family member.
Authorities said a stolen police cruiser driven by Misty Shelton t-boned an SUV, one block from the downtown square. Authorities said four people were inside that SUV, including 55-year-old Henry Holt. Tennessee State Troopers confirmed holt died in that crash.
Harry Patel owns the Shell gas station across the street and watched the SUV flip three times in the air before it came to a rest outside his store. Patel said he also recognized Shelton.
"I know she's my customer," said Patel.
It's unclear how Shelton commandeered the police cruiser.
Surveillance video from the gas station showed the wreck in detail. Police are using it as evidence in the investigation and have not released it.
Due to a reporting error, a previous version of this article stated that Misty Shelton had been released from the hospital. A hospital spokesperson only said that Shelton was not listed in the public directory. A family member later confirmed that Shelton is still in the hospital.
