HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

When you meet Huntsville senior Victoria Offei-Dua, it's easy to see why she's respected by her peers and instructors. But this ROTC Corp Commander is being recognized nationally. She entered a regional essay competition for the National Society Sons of the American Revolution and won. The essay was then sent to the State competition.

"After I won State level they said you have to take this to nationals and they took it to nationals and to God's glory I won nationals," she said.

The organization named her Outstanding Cadet of 2013. Only one cadet receives this title each year and this is the first time an Alabama student has been selected to receive the prestigious award.

Her personal story, undoubtedly, touched the heart of the judges.

"I am not an American citizen yet, I am an immigrant. I have lived here for the past four years, hoping to get my citizenship this year. But being in the ROTC has taught me so much more about being an American citizen, than watching TV or what somebody else can tell you about being an American."

Besides being at the top of her ROTC class, Victoria excels in school. She credits hard work and dedication to her success.

"Once I find something I love I put my whole self to it and I think that's what truly paid off for me," she said.

David: Showers and storms ongoing across the Valley

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
