Lights on at boarded up county building is costing taxpayers thousands

Posted: Updated:

Inside the old juvenile justice center furniture can be seen tossed about and the lights on.

The building has been closed since October 2011.

A 19 Action News producer recently passed by and noticed the lights on, so we investigated.

The county says the lights were left on by accident- by work crews or people looking at the building to see if they wanted to buy it.

But how long has this gone on with no one noticing?

The director of public works says the county is now reminding maintenance workers to turn off the lights--asking county security guards to pay attention and report if the lights are left on.

The building has a security system and fire alarm run by electricity.

We learned that the county spent $37,000 on power for that building last year..

All that for something boarded up.
