College football season is officially underway. Already, fans and sports analysts are making their picks for who will play for the national championship.

This is the final year for the Bowl championship series before a new playoff system takes over. A Huntsville man helps determine the BCS rankings. His program, called the Colley Matrix, is one of six used by the Bowl championship series.

Wes Colley is a professor at the University of Alabama at Huntsville. He uses a self-proclaimed "simple algebraic equation" to determine the best college football teams. As the season gets underway, it's good news for fans across the country. Right now, every team is ranked number one according to Colley's computer program. "Everybody is tied for first because it's based on wins and losses of the season," he explained.

However, that won't last for long. After the first few games, things start to shift, and by the fourth or fifth week, true rankings begin to emerge. "It seems like a miracle every year that you just take some wins and losses and stir it into some algebra, and magically these rankings come out that make sense," said Colley.

While Colley's algebraic equation doesn't predict point spreads or wins, he believes winners of the SEC conference will be decided early this year. "The huge came coming up between Texas A&M and Alabama on the third week will probably settle the West. Given that Georgia and South Carolina may settle the East, you start to feel like the SEC Championship ticket is punched by Week 3," Colley said.

Colley's computer program has been used by the BCS for 13 years, but this is the last year. The BCS will be replaced by a new playoff system.
