MONTGOMERY, AL (WAFF) - If you're heading to Auburn to watch the Tigers or to Atlanta to see the Crimson Tide, you should have construction-free sailing on the state's interstates over the holiday weekend.
The Alabama Department of Transportation said there will be no temporary lane closures on the interstates from noon Friday to midnight Monday.
The Labor Day weekend traffic is expected to be heavy, anyway, but the opening weekend of college football increases the likelihood of even more motorists on the highways.
ALDOT said limiting roadwork during the holiday period is a safety measure for travelers, construction workers and maintenance crews. The department limits road construction during major holiday weekends but emergency lane closures may be possible depending on circumstances on the interstates and other state roadways.
During last year's Labor Day 78-hour holiday period, 11 people died in vehicle crashes on Alabama roadways.
