Long awaited Madison I-565 interchange bid due Friday

MADISON, AL (WAFF) -

The Alabama Department of Transportation, ALDOT, is scheduled to reveal the winning bid for the long awaited, and delayed, interchange between County Line Road and I-565 in Madison on Friday.

"People are pretty excited," said Madison Mayor Troy Trulock. "We've waited a long, long time but our time has come."

Trulock predicted the interchange will make for an easier drive for Madison residents commuting to Huntsville and the Redstone Arsenal and encourage business development along County Line Road.

While reluctant to identify any of them, he said a variety have expressed interest.

"Predominantly retail kinds of businesses," said Trulock. "But you never know. We might have some kind of sports and recreation kind of infrastructure there, office space."

The $20 million project, paid for largely with federal highway money, has had the support of Governors Bob Riley and Robert Bentley but has been repeatedly postponed as cost issues have created delays. Trulock acknowledged that enthusiasm for the project has waxed and waned over years of false starts.

"People get excited again. We're going to turn the interchange on, and then funding issues come in place. I think this time we're really there. I met with director (John) Cooper, the director of ALDOT. He says we're on track."

The winning bid is scheduled to be posted on the ALDOT website on Friday morning. The actual construction process is expected to take 24 months.

"The good news is, we're putting the interchange under contract. The bad news is we're putting the interchange under contract," laughed Trulock. "So we're going to have to be prepared for road construction for the next 2 years on County Line Road and the interchange."
