Fresh choices in Madison City School cafeterias

MADISON, AL (WAFF) -

Some students will see more fresh nutritious choices on the lunch menu. Madison City Schools are bringing in new foods for the children while also supporting local farmers.

Tuesday's menu featured sweet potatoes from Haynes Farm in Cullman.

School leaders like the idea of introducing new foods to the students and said that buying from farmers benefits them financially.

"Sweet potatoes are not their favorite so that's a little bit of a challenge. But that's the whole idea is to bring new foods to the children and increase the variety in their diet. So, we're just going to use a lot of patience and persistence and we're going to keep bringing these foods in so the children get more familiar with them," said Marty Tatara, Child Nutrition Program Supervisor.

Later this week, they'll receive grape tomatoes and watermelons from local farmers.
