Huntsville City Schools scrap bonus for tenure removal plan

Huntsville City Schools changed course. The district is no longer considering a plan that would allow teachers in failing schools bonuses in exchange for their tenure status.

The district made the decision to scrap the plan after meeting with AEA officials late Tuesday afternoon.

Alabama Education Association's Rex Cheatham applauded the district's decision shortly after Huntsville City Schools removed the agenda from its Thursday night meeting.

"We're very pleased," said Cheatham.

The plan called for giving the teachers in all nine of Huntsville City Schools failing schools the option of a bonus in exchange for relinquishing their tenure. It takes three years to earn tenure in the system.

The main reason the idea was first proposed is because the new Alabama Accountability Act allows for it. Under AAA, the state determined what schools in Alabama fall under "school improvement" status. Students in failing schools are then allowed the option to transfer to a non-failing school. The law also allows district's to make proposals to the state that they deem could help the system.      

Huntsville City Schools is also working on an issue with district issued laptops. The system sent their entire student issued laptops for repair this summer.

District spokesperson Keith Ward said the laptops have come back in groups and the district has surpluses and shortages at schools. Ward said the district had backups they've given out to students that hadn't received their repaired laptop back yet.

Ward said the issue goes much deeper than just issuing a new computer.

"It's a little more complicated than the old days of the text books where you could box the text books up, throw them in the back of a truck and take it over to another school because of our inventory control," said Ward.
