SHEFFIELD, AL (WAFF) -

A Shoals girl is being called a hero after saving her little brother from a dog attack while being bitten herself.

Mackenzie Lebron was hospitalized for her injuries but is home now. She said she and her brother were getting ready to leave the house with their grandmother on Saywell Street in Sheffield when the dog attacked.

The eight-year-old said she was trying to save her four-year-old brother from the dog.

"I put him on top of the car and it came in to me," she said. "I tried to run from the dog an get on top of the car. My mawmaw was trying to push me on top of the car but it dragged me back down by my foot and started biting me on my leg.

"It didn't hurt at first but then it wouldn't let me go."

She had bite marks on her stomach and leg. "She says, ‘Aunt Chas, you know how somebody bites an apple? That's what that dog was doing to me," said her aunt Chastity Bradford, who was with her at the hospital.

"I kept telling her I know she was hurting and I couldn't feel her pain," Bradford said. "But if I was there, I would've ran in and let the dog attack me instead of her."

Officials said the dog was put to sleep Tuesday morning and sent off to be tested for rabies.

Family and friends say the second-grader is a hero for risking her life to save her brother.

"I'm very proud of her," Bradford said.
