Last week was just the first week of school. It was a busy week for police with incidents involving guns on school property. Last Tuesday, police said a father of a student showed up at a Florence school to have lunch with his child. Police say he became unruly and was caught with a gun on school property. Police say another parent was headed to an Athens school with a firearm following a domestic dispute. In Memphis, officials say a gun went off inside a kindergartner's backpack in a Memphis school cafeteria. No one was hurt. When a man walked into an Atlanta-area elementary school after firing multiple shots at police, the schools bookkeeper took heroic steps to calm the gunman and defused what could have been a potentially tragic situation. When the new Alabama gun laws went into effect on August 1st, there was no change to what is allowed on or near school property. Law enforcement wants everyone to know that the law states you can't legally carry a gun within a thousand feet of a school. If you are a gun owner, make a point to know Alabama's gun laws.
