MADISON, AL (WAFF) -

A gas line was cut near the intersection of Mill Road and Sullivan Street Tuesday morning, impacting a nearby school.

A crew working on water lines on Sullivan Street, adjacent to Madison Elementary School, cut a gas line.

The school was evacuated as a precaution, but officials said everything was under control and the students were not in danger.

The gas line was shut off, and North Alabama Gas employees are on the scene to inspect the damage. Some homes along Sullivan Street and Church are without gas while they check the lines.

Traffic is being diverted in the area, so drivers should avoid streets around the affected area.

The more than 500 students and 40 staff members went back inside the building and classes resumed before 10 a.m.

Madison City Schools released a statement about the situation on their blog (http://bit.ly/16O8JIN).
