HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A fire early Tuesday morning damaged a Huntsville fast food restaurant.

Around 2 a.m., a HEMSI supervisor reported that the Checkers on University Drive and Jordan Lane was on fire. The supervisor saw flames coming from the top of the restaurant.

Huntsville firefighters responded with three engine trucks and a ladder truck, and they had the fire out within minutes.

A district fire chief said something in the kitchen caught fire, and the flames spread to the roof, which suffered significant damage. Investigators are looking for the exact cause.

Huntsville Utilities shut off power to the building. There were several employees at the restaurant when the fire started, but no one was hurt.

The restaurant will stay closed until further notice.
