NORTH ALABAMA (WAFF) -

If you or someone you know is a senior citizen, authorities have a scam to warn you about.

The Better Business Bureau is alerting seniors about phone calls claiming to be from Medicare. The caller tells the person they're eligible to receive a Medicare or other supplemental medical coverage card, or supplies, like diabetic meters or motorized scooters.

"In this case, it's really tricky because a Medicare number is also a person's social security number. So without thinking, if they give out that number for a reason that sounds plausible, then they're giving up their social security number, which could unravel a lot of information about them," said Michele Mason with the Better Business Bureau.

And once someone gets your social security number, they can open accounts and claim to be the recipient of your social security benefits.
