ENTERPRISE, AL (WSFA) -

An investigation is underway following an officer involved shooting out of Coffee County that occurred over the weekend.

Coffee County Chief Deputy RW Whitworth says around 3 a.m. Saturday, an officer on routine patrol made a loop through a subdivision in Enterprise. While checking on business property, a vehicle came from behind and started following the unmarked deputy in close proximity.

Chief Deputy Whitworth says the vehicle got right on the officer's bumper and followed his every move. When the unmarked deputy pulled over his vehicle and stepped out, Whitworth says the deputy reported the driver seemed to realize it was an officer. The suspect then sped up and hit the officer.

Whitworth says the officer was flipped onto the hood of the suspect's where he stayed. The officer drew his weapon and began firing into the vehicle. After falling off the vehicle, the officer continued discharging his weapon. One of the rounds hit the fleeing suspect.

A pursuit quickly ensued, according to Whitworth. The suspect eventually abandoned his vehicle.

Search dogs were brought in and ultimately located the man around 10:30 a.m. in Daleville. Authorities took the man, later identified as 21-year-old Chris Evans, into custody and transported him to Enterprise Medical Center for treatment of a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

The officer was also treated and released.

Evans is now charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and two counts of possession of a controlled substance. Authorities say Evans had nothing to do with the officer's routine check of business property.

As a matter of procedure, the Alabama Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate due to the officer's discharge of a weapon. Also involved in the investigation are authorities with the Daleville and Enterprise Police Departments and the Coffee County District Attorney's office.
