RALEIGH, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Police charged a parent with two counts of aggravated assault Monday for allegedly stabbing and cutting two girls walking home from school.

The incident happened off campus as the two 16-year-olds walked home from Raleigh-Egypt High School.

Investigators say the assault came when two students argued with two other students as they walked home from school.

The woman charged is the mother of one of the students involved in the fight, according to investigators.

According to the police report, Valerie Potts stabbed one victim in the back and cut the other above her right eye with a small kitchen knife.

"One of the parents of one of the students was driving by and I think she witnessed that, and she got involved in it at that point a knife somehow was involved," said Memphis police major Lambert Ross.

Only one victim was treated at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital for her stab wound.

Some students have the video of the fight, but they did not want to release it.

Police say one of the victims picked Potts out of a six person photo spread. Potts is behind bars at Jail East. Both students are expected to recover.
