HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

An Alabama senator is hoping to reverse a new rule requiring hunters to report their kills to state officials.

Senator Paul Sanford said the new rule, called "Game Check," is unnecessary. The rule states that deer and turkey hunters have to report their kills within 24 hours. If they don't, they could face a fine of up to $500.

State conservationists said the rule is aimed at monitoring the population of deer and turkeys in the state. In a statement, Senator Sanford believes differently. He said, in part, "Hunters are on the front line of Animal Conservation, and we do not need the threat of a $500 fine to address a fabricated problem that stems from a department's desire to gain more revenue."

Sanford added that he hopes to reverse the rule before hunting season begins this fall.
