HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - More than 1,000 people showed up to walk to defeat ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
The Alabama chapter of the ALS Foundation hosted their ninth annual walk at McMillian Park Saturday. While the event is designed to raise money to find a cure, the funds also get put to work immediately for those suffering from the disease.
Anne Nolan with the Walk to Defeat ALS group said funds go to patient services such as the provision of wheelchairs and at-home ramp construction, as well as respite for family members so they can enjoy outings or personal time off.
The group's goal was to raise $220,000 during this year's event. An official total will be announced in the next few days.
