Teen remembered after hit and run death

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Friends of Elijah Coleman are reaching out to his family to help cover funeral expenses.

Elijah had autism, and ran onto I-75 last week when he was struck and killed by a hit and run driver. A memorial has been set up at I-75, and faculty at the Autistic Academy in Toledo, where Elijah went to school, have set up a fund at Huntington Bank for donations.

"We function as a community, so we want to help all of our families out as much as we can," said Principal Mark Lafferty.

Elijah's death struck a nerve for those who knew him. His family had an extensive security system installed to keep him from wandering off, but the day Elijah was hit, the system had been left off.

"I felt like I was in a nightmare, because it didn't hit me until Monday when I cleaned out his locker," said Elijah's teacher Kylie Goebel. "He knew how to make your day. His smile was contagious. He would have a burst of laughter."

Elijah's funeral is Saturday.
