RAINSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A man who was shot at a Rainsville department store is coming home. Josh Nance is now paralyzed and has been recovering at a rehabilitation center in Georgia.

A year ago Saturday, Nance and Matt Whitt were both shot in the back at the Fred's store in Rainsville. They were wrapping up for the day, when a man in a mask came in and shot the two men in the back before fleeing. That person was later identified as Kelly Jack Mayo. Mayo, a former Fred's employee, was arrested.

A lot of people were excited for Nance's return home from Atlanta, where he has been in rehabilitation. Josh's family did a great job of keeping the celebration a secret. In fact, when Nance arrived back in DeKalb County to see a police escort flanking him, he thought he was in trouble.

"To be home is unimaginable," said Nance. "I didn't think I would miss it as much as I did. It is amazing to be back home. It's just been awesome."

Nance enjoyed playing video games leading up to the incident. He plans to go back to college and major in a computer-based degree.

Mayo's trial is set for September 9.
