HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Echoing former President Ronald Reagan's "big tent" speech, State School Board member Mary Scott Hunter had harsh words for the Alabama Republican Party.

Hunter, a Republican who represents Madison, Limestone, DeKalb and Etowah counties, was censured this week by the Madison County Republican Executive Committee for her support of the Alabama College and Career Ready Standards, also known as the Common Core curriculum.

Hunter responded to the criticism and censure vote in a statement Friday.

"I simply don't believe, as some do, that the Alabama College and Career Ready Standards or the Common Core State Standards are a giant government conspiracy to control and socially engineer American school children," she said. "You can read the standards for yourself at the Alabama Department of Education's web site, and you will find good, high quality standards in English and Math that will better prepare students for college and/or a career."

She also criticized state party plans to censure and remove Steering Committee members who don't "100% toe the party line."

"I'm opposed to this," Hunter said. "This is not the Reagan Republican Party that I signed up for."

Hunter said she doesn't plan to leave the GOP and hopes fellow Republicans can agree to disagree.
