Baton Rouge City Court to open OMV office

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

In 60 days, with the approval of the East Baton Rouge Metro Council, motorist will be able to renew their driver's licenses and a multitude of other things, at a satellite office of motor vehicles.

The mini-OMV will be operated by the City Clerk's office and will be in Downtown Baton Rouge at 233 St. Louis Street. The project has been two years in the making and City Clerk Lon Norris hopes it will cut down on complaints from people who have had their licenses suspended.

"For the longest time people have objected to and complain about having to city court and handle business and then in the next moment have to go out to office of motor vehicles on Independence Blvd. and return back here to take care of their business," says Norris. "So we decided it would be a benefit to the public to do all that at one location."

Norris says the clerk's office will staff it at no additional cost to his budget. In fact it could add to the total amount of money coming in because people can clear up bench warrants sooner.

"This will enable them to come to city court to understand what their violation is and address their warrant at the same time," says Norris. "Hopefully well erase the number of bench warrants and get people on the right path."

The one thing that the satellite office cannot do is issue original drivers licenses.
