The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center has just finished work on a $30 million facelift.

The newly renovated building is called The Wallace Tumor Institute. City and state leaders officially opened it this morning in a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The six-story building has state of the art technology including a 61,000-pound cyclotron, which is a powerful particle accelerator. It's the most powerful one in any U.S. academic medical center.

During this morning's ceremony, one woman shared how the cancer center has helped her battle cancer six times.

"From day one I have been here under the care of Dr. Andres Forero The first time I met him he was at my bedside and he said, 'Mary Ann, your tumor will melt like butter in a pan.' From that moment we formed a very special bond," Mary Ann Harvard said.

The Wallace Tumor Institute is named after former Governor Lurleen Wallace, who battled cancer in 1967. At that time she had to travel to Houston for treatment because there was no specialized cancer center in Alabama
