Weyerhaeuser to re-start Evergreen timber mill; plans to hire 100 employees

EVERGREEN, AL (WSFA) -

Weyerhaeuser, one of the world's largest private owners of timberlands, announced Friday that it will re-start production on three lines at its Evergreen mil. The decision is effective immediately.

The mill had been closed for more than four years, company officials said, because of a weak demand for wood products in North America.

Officials say the company has already hired a plant manager and adds that more than 100 people should be employed by the mill by the end of 2014.

"Customer demand for engineered wood products has improved over the last year and our Evergreen facility is the ideal location to add production capacity..." said Jan Marrs, manufacturing manager for Weyerhaeuser Engineered Lumber Products. "With our markets improving and positive support from both the state and local community, we are looking forward to re-starting this facility."

The Evergreen Trus Joist facility was acquired by Weyerhaeuser in 2000.

"Governor Bentley and state and local economic leaders continuously work to cultivate a culture ripe for commerce in Alabama," said Lt. Gov. Kay Ivey. "Weyerhaeuser's decision to reopen the mill in Evergreen is an example of another positive business investment in Alabama and particularly in the Black Belt."

Weyerhaeuser also operates a lumber manufacturing facility in Millport and a Nursery Tree Improvement Center in Camden. Leaders say it sustainaby manages more than 547,000 acres of timberland in 23 counties.

"Weyerhaeuser's investment combined with the development of Golden Dragon in Wilcox County and the Alabama Forestry Association's Black Belt Initiative, with which I work closely to increase student awareness about forestry-related careers, are the kind of ongoing economic advances that we need to create jobs and get people in Alabama's hardest hit areas back to work."
